Schluter Cup 2006

The Schluter Cup competition took place over the weekend 19th/20th August 2006 at Shannon MFC. This is the
Irish round of the International Schluter Cup series which has taken place since 1992.

Dave Wilshere and Jamie Cole came along to take part in the competition and fly demos for the event.

As soon as he arrived, Dave Wilshere had this electric
ducted fan ready for take-off. No wheels, it slides along
the grass.

Difficult to catch with the camera, going past like a bullet!

Parked again - it's powered by a 3 cell 2100 LiPo pack.

This Wren powered L39 was next to go for a flight.

Another difficult aircraft to catch on a fast flypast. This was
flown a number of times over the weekend,
very impressive indeed.

Fast low passes, huge loops, slow rolls - superb !

With a smooth touchdown every time on the grass strip.

Wren turbine neatly tucked away with a flap for access.

Jamie Cole spends most of his flying time upside down.
Must be using funny fuel.

Upside down backwards....

Caught here the right way up, but look at the exhaust trail.

Some sort of a backwards inverted loopy thing.

Usually very close to the ground !

The Schluter Cup Novelty Tasks.

The Schluter Cup novelty event is divided into 3 consecutive tasks each of 2 minutes duration.

The scores of the 3 tasks are added together to give a total for the event.

Task (1) involves flying a figure 8 circuit around
2 poles and the object is to fly as many circuits
as possible in the 2 minutes.

Task (2) involves knocking a bottle off a table
with your skids, flying around a pole and coming
back to knock off another bottle (which has been
replaced by a helper).

The object is to knock off as
many bottles as possible in 2 minutes.

Task (3) involves lifting pylons, which have built-in wire
hooks, with the skids of your helicopter and depositing
them outside a square box marked on the ground.

The pylons are located on top of a 6 foot tower and are
replaced by your helper as you remove them.

The object is to deposit as many pylons outside the
square as possible in the 2 minutes.

There were some interesting skid alterations to help
with the novelty tasks.

But you still had to take your time and be very careful
not to get too close to the barrel or the tower.....

This tube added to the skids would have helped to
knock the bottles over.

Unfortunately Alan got a bit too close to the tower!

Dave had a modification for pylon catching, but touched
the tail rotor against the barrel so this heli
had to retire as well.

This tidy modification was quite successful with the pylons.

A few of the models entered in the scale competition.

Obviously the result of many hours of hard work.

The proud owner/builder of some of these fine
scale models.

Billy let me hover this magnificent Huey in
the scale competition.

Static judging in progress.

This won 1st place in the scale competition.

Billy brought along his latest project, a huge Bell 47.

Tail blades would be big enough for main blades on a
smaller helicopter.

4 huge servos under the swashplate, the tanks will
probably hide the real petrol containers.

It's all powered by a substantial pull-start petrol engine.

It will be spectacular when he gets it finished and flying.

The top five from the Novelty competition are entered into the FAI event on Sunday. This consists of 9 flight manoeuvres and
must be completed within 10 minutes. A square area 10m x 10m is marked out for hovering manoeuvres and to act as take-off
and landing area. The corner points of the square and the hovering points are marked with flags. A circle 1m diameter is marked
in the centre of the square. The manoeuvres are

   1. Vertical triangle
   2. Fixed heading circle
   3. Vertical rectangle
   4. Loop
   5. Roll
   6. Stall turn
   7. Split S (half roll, straight & level, half indide loop)
   8. Pushover (vertical climb, hover, vertical descent)
   9. 180 degree auto, or straight auto or straight landing

Dave flying the rectangle in the FAI competition.
His 180 degree auto was a delight to watch.

Liam finishes his FAI flight with an auto right
onto the centre circle.

David Nolan and his Dad Liam. David flew some fantastic
demos, one with Jamie Cole where they began to improvise
some synchronised 3D. Sorry no pics as you just had to stop
and watch !

Many thanks to David who kindly volunteered as my helper
in the novelty flights and caller in the FAI.

This event is a very friendly fun meeting, everyone
takes home a prize and certificates are issued to
all finalists.

Thanks again to all present for setting it all
up, the flying and the banter was first class
and I would hope to be back for the next one.

The 2007 Schluter Cup is scheduled to take
place on 11th/12th August - well worth a visit.
